AI Story Generator: Turn One Idea Into a Complete Story
With AI Story Kit, one line about a character or a "what if" becomes a finished story with a real ending. This AI story generator lets you pick a genre, length, tone and reader, then keep writing, add pictures or make it a video.

How to Write a Story With the AI Story Generator
Three steps take you from a blank box to a story you can read aloud tonight, whether you want an AI short story generator for a quick bedtime tale or a story maker for a longer project.
Describe your idea
Type a sentence or two into the idea box: who the story is about, what they want and what stands in the way. "A shy dragon who is afraid of the dark" is enough to start. Add a name, a place or a twist if you already have one in mind, and the story will be built around it.
Choose genre, length, tone and audience
Tap a genre chip, then set the three dropdowns. Short and Medium stories run up to 1,200 words, and Long goes up to 2,500. Tone decides whether the story feels cozy, funny or spooky, and Audience picks the vocabulary and how intense the conflict gets, from Kids to Teens to Adults.
Generate, then continue or rewrite
Press Write my story and read the result. If you want more, Continue writes the next scene in the same voice. If one part misses, Rewrite redoes it with a note from you, such as "make the villain sneakier" or "end on a cliffhanger." When the text feels right, illustrate it or turn it into a video from the same toolbar.
What Kinds of Stories Can You Make?
Pick a genre to set the rules of the world before the first word is written. Each chip nudges plot shape, pacing and word choice, so a mystery plants clues early and a bedtime story winds down instead of building to a shock.
Fantasy
Dragons, quests, enchanted forests and magic with a cost. Good for epic adventures and small, cozy tales alike.
Bedtime
Calm stories with a gentle problem and a soft landing, sized for reading aloud before lights out.
Adventure
Treasure maps, storms at sea and races against the clock, with a hero who has to be brave more than once.
Romance
Meet-cutes, slow burns and second chances, kept sweet and focused on feelings rather than anything graphic.
Horror
Creaking stairs, cursed objects and a final twist. Set Audience to Kids for a shivery campfire tale instead of a nightmare.
Sci-fi
Space stations, time loops and robots with opinions. Ask for a specific invention and the plot will follow its rules.
Mystery
A missing necklace, a locked room, a list of suspects. The clues are fair, so a sharp reader can solve it first.
Fanfic
Put characters you love into new scenes, alternate endings or crossovers. For longer fan stories with canon details, use our dedicated fanfic generator.
Add Pictures or Turn Your Story Into a Video
Text is only the first draft of what this AI story maker can produce. Every story can grow into a picture book or a short film without copying it into another app.
Illustrated storybook
Switch on Add pictures, or press Illustrate after the story is written, and each page gets its own illustration in the art style you choose. Your main characters keep the same face, outfit and colors from page to page. A picture uses 3 credits, and a 10-page book with a cover comes to about 41. See how page layouts and art styles work in the storybook generator.
Storybook video
Turn an illustrated book into a narrated video: each picture gets a slow pan or zoom, a voice reads the text aloud, and captions run along the bottom. Narration is billed at 20 credits a minute, which makes it the easiest way to share a bedtime story with family who live far away.
Animated story video
For real motion, the AI story video generator turns your story into a script, designs each character so they look the same in every shot, films the scenes as moving AI video and stitches them together with captions. Animated video comes with a paid plan or credit pack.
Stuck for an Idea? Start With a Plot
An empty box is the hardest part of AI storytelling. If nothing comes to mind, let a prompt do the first push.
- Roll a premise, a twist or a title with the plot generator, then paste the one you like into the idea box.
- Browse our list of story ideas, sorted by genre and age, from funny school mishaps to dystopian cities.
- Tap a card on the example shelf above to load its idea and settings, then change one detail to make it yours.
Plot rolls are free and don't use your daily stories, so you can try as many as you like before you write.
Tips for Better AI Stories
Think of this as an AI story generator based on prompt details: everything it knows about your story comes from the idea box and the settings. Small, concrete details change the result more than long instructions do.
Give your hero a want and a flaw
A character who wants something and has a reason they might fail gives the story a spine. "A knight" produces a generic quest. "A knight who faints at the sight of blood has to win a tournament to save her family's farm" produces a plot, a running joke and a satisfying ending.
Add one specific detail about the place
Swap "a spooky house" for "a lighthouse where the fog whispers the keeper's name." One unusual detail gives the scenes something to return to, and it keeps two stories on the same theme from sounding alike.
Say how you want it to end
If the ending matters, write it in: "a happy ending where the dragon gets a night-light," "a twist where the narrator was the thief," or "stop on a cliffhanger so I can continue."
Choose a voice or a rule
Point of view and constraints shape the style. Try "told by the cat in first person," "every chapter starts with a letter from Grandma," or "use the word marmalade at least three times." Kids love spotting a hidden rule.
| Vague idea | Stronger prompt |
|---|---|
| A story about space | A 9-year-old stowaway on a cargo ship to Mars has to hide a hungry alien pet until landing |
| A love story | Two rival bakers are forced to share one oven at the county fair and keep sabotaging each other's pies |
| A scary story | A babysitter notices the baby monitor is picking up a lullaby nobody in the house is singing |
When a draft is close but not quite there, use Rewrite with one clear change rather than starting over. "Make the middle funnier" or "cut the ending to two paragraphs" works better than "make it better."
Free vs Paid
Writing stories is free every day, and credits pay for the heavier work of pictures and video. Here's what each level includes.
| Guest | Free account | Paid plan or credit pack | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short and Medium stories each day | 5 | 10 | 20 |
| Daily credits | None | 20 | From your plan or pack |
| Long stories at 2 credits | Not available | Included | Included |
| Continue and Rewrite at 1 credit | Not available | Included | Included |
| Illustrated storybooks | Not available | Small corner mark on pictures | Clean, unmarked pages |
| Narrated storybook videos | Not available | Watermarked | Clean |
| Animated story videos | Not available | Not available | Included |
| How long your work is kept | Not saved | 7 days | 180 days |
Paid plans begin at $9.99 per month; that buys 1,000 credits, roughly 24 illustrated storybooks. Credit packs never renew and stay valid for 12 months. Compare every plan side by side, along with what each credit buys.

Questions About Writing Stories With AI
Is there a free AI story generator with no sign up?
Yes. You can write up to 5 Short or Medium stories a day as a guest, with no account and no card. Guest stories aren't saved, so copy or download anything you want to keep. A free account raises the limit to 10 stories a day and adds 20 credits for pictures, Long stories and continuations.
Can AI write a story for me?
Yes. Type something as simple as "write me a story about a penguin who wants to fly," choose a genre and length, and you get a complete story with a beginning, middle and end. You stay in charge of the direction: continue it, rewrite parts or change the settings and try again.
Does the AI story generator have a content filter?
Yes. Every request and every story passes through a content filter, and AI Story Kit won't write sexual content, hateful material or real-world harm. Darker themes still work: villains, ghost stories, sad endings and tense mysteries are all fine, and the Kids audience setting keeps them gentle.
What is the best AI story generator?
It depends on what you want to end up with. If you only need a quick piece of text, plenty of free tools will do. AI Story Kit is built for people who want to take a story further: continue it chapter by chapter, illustrate it with consistent characters, or turn it into a narrated or animated video. Coming from Perchance? Our Perchance AI story generator alternative compares the two tools feature by feature.
Who owns the stories I create?
You do. The stories, pictures and videos you make belong to you, and you can share them, print them for your family or post them online. Your stories are not used to train AI models. Commercial use, such as selling a book, is covered in our terms of service.
Can I continue a story I already started?
Yes. Press Continue under any story and the next scene picks up where the last one stopped, with the same characters and tone. You can steer it with a short note like "now they reach the castle." In that role it works as an AI story continuer, and each continuation uses 1 credit from a free or paid account.
Is AI Story Kit good for kids?
Set Audience to Kids and stories use simpler words, shorter sentences and conflicts that resolve kindly, which suits early readers and bedtime. Parents and teachers use it to make a story starring a child's favorite toy or to practice reading. Younger children should use it with a grown-up nearby.
How long can a story be?
Short and Medium stories run up to 1,200 words, about a five to eight minute read aloud. Long stories go up to 2,500 words and use 2 credits. Need more? Keep pressing Continue to add scenes, and the tool turns into a story creator for chapter books built one part at a time.
Can I edit the story myself?
Yes. Copy the text into any editor, or use Rewrite to change one section with an instruction while the rest stays the same. You can also adjust the idea box and generate again; a small change to the hero or the setting often leads somewhere new.
