How to Write Fanfiction With AI
Good fan stories start from something specific: a moment canon skipped, a pairing that never got its scene, a "what if" you keep thinking about in the shower. The tool needs that spark plus a few choices, and it handles the first draft.
1. Name your fandom
Type the source the way fans say it, whether that's a long fantasy series, a video game, an anime or a K-drama. You can be precise, too: "after season 3" or "post-canon, ten years later" tells the AI where in the timeline to set things.
2. Pick characters and a pairing
Add the characters you want on the page. Choose No pairing for a gen story about friendship, rivalry or adventure, or pair two characters for a ship fic. Original characters work as well; give them a name and one line about who they are.
3. Choose a trope or AU, rating, POV and length
The trope gives the story its shape, while an AU swaps out the setting. Rating stays at General or Teen. Point of view sets the voice: first person for an inner monologue, second person for a reader insert, third person for a classic narrator. Length runs from a quick scene to a Long piece.
4. Generate, then keep writing
Press Write my fanfic and read the draft. If a scene lands wrong, Rewrite it with a note such as "make him more sarcastic, like in canon." If you want more, press Continue for the next chapter. That loop is where an AI fanfic generator earns its place: you steer, it drafts, and the story stays yours to shape.
Starting from nothing but a mood? Roll a premise with the plot generator, then bring it back here and drop in your characters.
Popular Tropes and AUs
Tropes are the shared language of fandom. Readers search for them by name, so picking one up front also tells you how to tag the finished fic. These are the options people reach for most often.
| Trope or AU | What it means |
|---|---|
| Enemies to lovers | Two characters who can't stand each other slowly find out the friction was something else. |
| Friends to lovers | Years of easy closeness tip over when one of them finally notices. |
| Slow burn | Feelings build over many scenes, and the payoff is delayed on purpose. |
| Found family | Misfits with no one else end up choosing each other as kin. |
| Hurt/comfort | One character gets hurt, physically or emotionally, and another stays to help them heal. |
| Fake dating | A pretend relationship, staged for a good reason, stops feeling pretend. |
| Fix-it | A rewrite of a canon event that broke your heart, so the ending goes the way it should have. |
| Time loop | Someone relives the same day or event and has to change something to escape it. |
| Soulmate AU | The universe marks two people as meant to be, through a timer, a shared mark or matching words. |
| Coffee shop AU | The cast becomes baristas and regulars, with no quest and no magic, just small daily moments. |
| Modern AU | Characters from a fantasy or historical canon move into today's world of phones and rent. |
| Canon divergence | One decision in canon goes differently, and the story follows where that change leads. |
Tropes combine well. "Enemies to lovers in a coffee shop AU" or "found family plus time loop" gives the AI a clearer brief than either piece alone. Add a line in the notes box about the scene you want most, and the draft will be built toward it.
One-Shots or Multi-Chapter Fics
Decide the format before you generate, because it changes how the first draft is built.
One-shots
A one-shot is a complete story in a single piece: one confession, one missing scene, one alternate ending. Pick One-shot and the AI wraps things up by the last paragraph. This is the best format for fix-its, short fluff, prompts from a fic exchange and late-night "I just need this scene to exist" ideas.
Multi-chapter fics
Pick Chapter 1 instead, and the opening sets up conflict without resolving it. From there, Continue writes the following chapter with the same cast, pairing, trope and POV, picking up where the last one stopped. Before you press it, add a short note on what should happen next, such as "they get stuck on the night shift together." Slow burns, time loops and canon divergence stories usually need this room to breathe.
Tips for keeping a long fic consistent
- Keep a short outline of the beats you want, and feed the next one in as a note each time.
- Reread the last chapter before continuing, and fix names or details right away with Rewrite.
- Edit as you go. Fanfic AI drafts get more distinctive when you add your own lines, jokes and callbacks to canon.
Stories here follow the same daily allowance as the main AI story generator: free Short and Medium stories every day, then credits for Long fics and for each Continue or Rewrite.
Posting AI Fanfic: What to Know
Most fan archives have their own rules, and they change. Here is what the main platforms said when we last checked, kept short on purpose.
AO3
AO3's Terms of Service don't prohibit works created fully or partly with AI tools, as long as they qualify as fanworks. The archive offers optional tags, starting with "Created Using Generative AI," so readers can filter AI-assisted works in or out. Tagging isn't required, but labeling AI help honestly is good practice. AO3 also forbids scraping its works for commercial generative AI, and AI Story Kit does not import or train on AO3 content.
Wattpad and other sites
Wattpad's published terms of service and content guidelines don't set a general rule on AI-written stories. Its Wattys 2026 contest, though, says it strongly discourages generative AI, so contest entries are a different matter. For FanFiction.net and every other site, check each site's current rules before you post.
Copyright, briefly
Fanfiction is usually a derivative work, and fair use gets decided case by case, so selling fanfiction carries real copyright risk. The U.S. Copyright Office's position is that purely AI-generated material isn't protected by copyright, while the creative choices you add by rewriting, editing and arranging the text can be. You're responsible for respecting the original creators' rights and the rules of wherever you post. None of this is legal advice; treat it as general background.
Questions About Writing Fanfic With AI
Is there an AI fanfiction generator free of charge?
Yes, this one. Short and Medium fics come out of a free daily allowance. Guests get 5 a day, signed-in free accounts get 10, and every paid plan gets 20. Long fics use 2 credits, and each extra chapter from Continue uses 1. Free accounts also get 20 credits daily. All plans and credit packs are listed with their prices.
Is AI fanfic allowed on AO3?
Under AO3's current Terms of Service, yes. Works made fully or partly with AI tools aren't prohibited if they qualify as fanworks. Tagging is optional, but AO3 offers tags such as "Created Using Generative AI" that let readers include or exclude those works, and using them honestly is good practice. Rules can change, so reread the archive's terms before you post.
Can the AI write mature or sexual scenes?
No. Every fic is rated General or Teen, and the content filter blocks sexual content in every fandom, for every pairing, however a request is worded. Romance itself is fine: crushes, longing, confessions, jealousy and slow-burn tension all fit within a Teen rating. Dark themes like grief, war or a villain's backstory work too, handled without graphic detail.
Does the AI know my fandom's canon?
It recognizes many popular books, shows, games and anime by name, but it can mix up details, especially for niche or very recent canon. Add the facts that matter in the characters field and notes: ages, powers, relationships, where in the timeline you are. As with any fanfiction AI, the more canon you supply, the closer the voices get.
Can I write a reader insert or use original characters?
Yes. Choose second person for a reader-insert story where "you" are part of the scene, or add an original character with a name and a one-line description. Original characters can be paired with canon characters, or appear in a gen story without any romance.
Is it an AI fanfic writer or a fanfic maker for quick drafts?
Both. Use it as a fanfic maker when you want a finished one-shot to read tonight, or as an AI fanfiction writer that drafts chapters you then revise line by line. Many fanfic writers use it for the scenes they're stuck on and write the rest themselves.
Can I sell fanfiction I write here?
Be very careful. Fan stories borrow characters and worlds that belong to someone else, and fair use isn't guaranteed, so charging money for them raises your copyright risk. Purely AI-generated text also isn't protected by U.S. copyright. Posting for free on fan archives is the usual path. This is general background, not legal advice.
